On June 24th 2017 at approximately 12:17 A.M. Deputy Robert Missey made a traffic stop at the 48 Mile-Marker on I-30. The traffic stop was made due to the suspect vehicle traveling 84 miles per hour in a 70 mile per hour zone. Deputy Missey observed a strong odor known to him to be associated with the odor of burning Marijuana coming from within the vehicle. Sgt. Steve Otwell arrived on scene to assist. Deputy Missey and Otwell conducted an investigation into the odor Deputy Missey noticed. The Passenger of the vehicle described as a Hispanic Male and identified as Ricardo Avila from Chicago, Ill admitted to Missey he was in possession of Marijuana and had recently smoked Marijuana in the vehicle. Ricardo Avila was placed under arrest for possession of a controlled substance and for possession of drug paraphernalia. The Driver was cited for speeding 84-70 and was released.
